Associate CIOs
Maury Hope, Associate CIO
As Associate CIO, Maury Hope oversees project management as well as the initiative to upgrade the university's administrative systems. The current emphasis of the long range plan is on a data warehouse, the financial systems, and research administration systems.
Hope has over thirty-five years of experience in information technology in business and higher education. He has served Iowa State University as the Director of Administrative Technology Services. He has also been the Vice President of Information Services in the property and casualty insurance industry.
Hope obtained his B.S. degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Iowa State University.
John Kingland, Associate CIO
As Associate CIO, Kingland oversees wide-area networking initiatives including representing Iowa State University in BOREAS-Net. He also has the responsibility of overseeing major telecommunications infrastructure projects on campus. He serves on the NTNC Executive Committee and represents ISU in intrastate cooperative networking initiatives with the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, and the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
Kingland has served Iowa State University for over 38 years in various IT-related positions and projects, with 20 years as Director of Telecommunications.
Kingland earned his B.S. from Iowa State University in Industrial Administration.
David Popelka, Associate CIO
As Associate CIO, David Popelka oversees five of the area directors and their sub teams. David is also responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department.
Popelka has extensive experience in IT planning and business alignment, cost analysis, project development, and human resources. He has served Iowa State as the Deputy Director for Academic Information Technologies and the Assistant Director of Residence.
Popelka's educational background includes a B.S. in Industrial Administration, an M.S. in Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management, and a Ph.D. in Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management and Family and Consumer Science Education, all from Iowa State University.
