Solution Center - Technical Assistant
Solution Center Technical Support Assistants help students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State University with Information Technology questions. Applicants should be confident and enjoy working with others to find a solution for customers. People applying should be self-motivated to improve Solution Center documentation and enhance systems used throughout Iowa State University. Extensive training will be provided for all programs and applications supported by IT Services. Generally, questions include (but are not limited to) account management, network troubleshooting, OS support, and installation of ITS supported software. Phone support also extends to Net-Id Services such as registration, email, lists and personal webpage setup.
To be considered for this position, you must be an undergraduate student with a clear telephone voice, customer service skills, and troubleshooting experience with Windows. All applicants must be able to work the first week of school for the fall and spring semesters, and the week before the fall semester begins. Students must be able to work at least 3 semesters after hire.
Preferred QualificationsIt is preferred, but not required to have experience with Macintosh and Linux (esp. RHEL) computers.

Web Development - Technical Assistant
Develop and maintain web services for Information Technology Services and other Iowa State University departments. Work includes programming, database design, testing and evaluating web services, maintaining client content, web server maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
Familiarity with standard web principles and concepts; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently; detail-oriented, creative, and self-motivated; and strong communication skills. Web experience through personal interests and projects, a student organization, or professional experience; be comfortable working in a PC-Linux environment; proficient in programming with at least one modern programming language.
Preferred QualificationsAt least three semesters remaining, genuine interest in web development, primary areas of proficiency will include: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, XML/XSLT, JavaScript

Academic Systems - Internship
Research, design, program, and develop systems to provide innovative new services.
Proficient in C programming language. Thorough understanding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols. Comfortable working in a PC/Unix development environment. Application Development - Internship
Program and upgrade university information systems. Intern will learn how to check out, modify, and check in programs in a production environment. The majority of projects involve working with COBOL. Occasional assignments may use HTML and JAVA.
Requires experience with COBOL. One year job commitment.
Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of and/or experience with relational databases, HTML, JAVA, CICS and OS/390 would be beneficial, but not required.

Communications - Editorial Assistant
Provide assistance in producing IT Services communication materials including handouts, documents, brochures, booklets, posters, news releases, newsletters, web content, and other promotional material in paper and/or electronic formats. Includes editing, proofing, formatting, designing, researching, and writing using Word, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and other software packages on Macintosh and Windows computers. Computer Operations - Technical Assistant
Assist Operations staff in monitoring multiple critical computer systems in a large 24 X 7 data center. Work closely with support teams when responding to problems, performing diagnostic procedures and providing documentation. Monitors computer room environment and support components, responds to alarm conditions and helps to ensure computer room and building security. The data center is staffed 24 X 7 365 days per year. Scheduled hours can be anytime during a 24 hour day and often includes weekends, breaks, holidays as well as summer employment.
Knowledge of basic information technology principles. Must be responsible and able to work alone with little supervision and available to work weekends and holidays. Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to lift 30-50 pounds.
Preferred QualificationsPrefer Computer Science or MIS major or demonstrated interest in Information Technology field.

Computer Repair & Service - Technical Assistant
Assist in all aspects of repairing Apple, Dell, and Gateway computers, as well as Dell and Hewlett Packard laser printers. Work includes but is not limited to equipment pickup and delivery, equipment check in / checkout, cleaning, trouble-shooting, parts ordering and replacement, software installation and repair, and quality control. Interface with individuals across the entire spectrum of Iowa State and maintain confidentiality with regard to customer information obtained or observed in the performance of their duties. Maintain records and documentation of all work done. Environment is cordial and dress is casual.
Applicants must have a strong interest in computer hardware and software and be able to think logically and reason through problem-solving. Applicants must have high ethical standards, good customer service skills, and be fluent in both written and spoken English. Ability to lift/carry loads of 50 lbs. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to pass a University driver's license background check.
Preferred QualificationsBeing a Computer Service Technical Assistant requires commitment and a great deal of skill development. For this reason, Computer Service prefers to hire individuals who will be around to continue working for several years, including summers and breaks (vacations are of course permitted).

SNAP/Solution Center - Technical Assistant
Student Network Access Program (SNAP) has the duty of helping students get their computers connected to the university network. Our team works on student computers in the residence halls and also in-house. We troubleshoot network problems, proactively secure student computers, and remove viruses and spyware.
